Word up

When it comes to business decisions, there is no more powerful QA than ensuring that any recommendation allowed before the Management Team is fully thought through, rigorously argued, and based on data laid open to scrutiny.

Presentations are no match to a memo. They can give structure to a meeting, but they always depend on the occasion, the presenter, the discussions. Referred to three months later, one invariably finds that they omit much that mattered; consulted after a year, many turn out to be unintelligible.

Memos force a writer to be explicit, acknowledge - and then fill - argumentative gaps, add substance to a catchy header: they have many virtues - and for the sake of their readers deserve to be written well.
